Because I was an obviously gay child growing up during the peak of the AIDS crisis, my mother knew that HIV/AIDS was going to touch my life one way or another, and she was terrified. Thankfully, today so much of that fear and stigma is gone, particularly within LGBTQIA+ spaces. The intentional self-love and mutual support that we as queer folks have worked tirelessly to instill in ourselves and our communities is a blessing that we freely share with all those around us.
Now the burden of the disease has very much shifted, especially here in the South, and as the broader social and political structures around us continue to degrade, our radical inclusivity and fierce loyalty make our community a bright and shining fortress of hope and a safe harbor for all who need it.
Today I invite you to connect with that hope by supporting those of us living with or who have a high chance of acquiring that most special of syndromes.
I’ve set an audacious goal of $5,000. Don’t let it scare you! Please give only what you’re comfortable giving. That said, I know that there’s at least one potential super donor in my life who will read this and think “I can close that entire gap right now.” Well, hey, why not?
Do it, Do it, Do it!
